PRESS RELEASE

Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers Give a Thumbs-up to British Columbia’s Clean Transportation Initiative.

Toronto, ON – 2011-11-06

The Canadian Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Association (CVMA) welcomes today’s $17M Clean Transportation initiative announced by B.C. Environment Minister Terry Lake and Energy and Mines Minister Rich Coleman. This initiative will assist consumers with the purchase and operation of new advanced technology vehicles, provide better public and residential access to supporting infrastructure and assist with removing older, higher-polluting vehicles from the roads, all of which will deliver real environmental benefits to British Columbians.

“We commend the B.C. government for taking positive steps which will contribute to greener energy technology development in the province and for its foresight to take a more holistic approach that includes both vehicles and supporting refueling and recharging infrastructure”, said Mark Nantais, President of the CVMA. “Assisting consumers with their purchase of an advanced technology vehicle, whether it be a plug-in hybrid, an electric vehicle with extended range, or a natural gas vehicle, is just the first step. Providing the necessary support for the refueling and recharging infrastructure is critical to the success of these vehicles in the market place. ”

There is a triple win in turning over the on-road vehicle fleet by making it easier for a consumer to give up their older higher polluting vehicle and replace it with a new vehicle that is cleaner, more fuel efficient and equipped with the most advanced safety systems. Today’s announcement, which identifies an additional $2.5 million for the successful B.C. Scrap-it program, is important to achieving the fleet turnover objective, provide a triple win benefit for consumers.
