PRESS RELEASE

Canadian Automakers Endorse The Government Of Canada’s Direction On Moving Forward With New Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Emissions Standards.

Toronto, ON – 2011-11-16

The member companies of the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers’ Association (CVMA) welcomed today’s announcement by federal Environment Minister Kent regarding the government’s continued commitment to align future light duty vehicle GHG standards with the United States. This announcement builds on the Government of Canada’s previous work with the U.S. government which established common North American standards for regulating vehicle-related GHG emissions from passenger cars and light trucks for the 2011-2016 model years. It also provides industry the necessary certainty of a single continental regulatory program for vehicle-related GHG emissions which will result in significant environmental benefits.

“The Government of Canada is to be commended for its leadership on addressing vehicle-related GHG emissions using an approach that recognizes the integrated nature of the Canadian and U.S. auto industry, while delivering major GHG emission reductions. While the existing vehicle GHG standards covering the 2011 to 2016 model years and the proposed new bi-national standards (2017 and beyond ) are extremely aggressive and complex, our member companies are committed to doing their part to meet the challenge” said Mr. Mark Nantais, President of the CVMA. He further said, “by taking this North American aligned approach with Canada’s existing and proposed vehicle GHG regulations, consumers, across Canada will be able to purchase the widest variety of new vehicles and technologies and it will provide larger economies of scale for the design, development and production of advanced vehicle technologies necessary to meet these very dramatic reductions in light duty vehicle GHG emissions.” This announcement sets the regulatory path forward that automakers need to meet the goals of the improved fuel consumption and reduced GHG emissions. Environment Canada and the U.S. EPA are to be congratulated on their collaborative approach.
